Free things to do in Leiden: walks, courtyards and views · Leiden

What can you do in Leiden for free?

Walk from Leiden Centraal via Rapenburg to Pieterskerk, then continue to De Burcht. Streets, canals and façades form a free open-air introduction to the city, while De Burcht gives you an overview of the compact centre.

Continue along Nieuwe Rijn, Koornbrug and the historic fish market. On Wednesday and Saturday the market adds atmosphere without requiring a purchase. A Singelpark walk is also free and works especially well in dry weather.

Visit courtyards respectfully

Some Leiden courtyards are accessible during the day, but they remain residential spaces. Enter only when a gate is clearly open, keep your voice down, stay on paths and do not photograph residents. A closed gate is not an invitation to ring the bell.

Churches, studios and events may occasionally offer free entry, but this varies. Treat them as a bonus and base your route on public streets, De Burcht and the park.
