Museum De Lakenhal
Museum De Lakenhal is Leiden's city museum, housed in the monumental Laecken-Halle from 1640 on the Oude Singel. After a thorough renovation in 2019 the building combines seventeenth-century grandeur with a clean modern interior. **Why visit** This is the museum where you understand why Leiden was one of the wealthiest cities of the Dutch Golden Age. The collection tells the city's story through paintings, silver, glass and historic objects -- from the cloth industry that made the city rich to the artists who worked here. **Highlights** The Last Judgement by Lucas van Leyden, a 1526-1527 triptych that ranks among the most important Dutch paintings. Works by the young Rembrandt and Jan Steen, both born in Leiden. The historical rooms about the 1574 Siege and Relief. And the temporary exhibitions that consistently surprise. **Practical** Allow one and a half to two and a half hours. The museum has a cafe with a waterside terrace. Free entry with Museumkaart. Pilgrim Museum Leiden
The Leiden American Pilgrim Museum is a small, intimate museum in an authentic fourteenth-century house in the Beschuitsteeg, in the heart of the Pieterskwartier. **Why visit** The Pilgrims lived in Leiden for eleven years before sailing to America in 1620. This was no brief stopover -- they worked here, married here, had children and built a community. The museum tells that story honestly, without romanticising it. **What you will see** The house itself is furnished as a seventeenth-century Leiden home, with furniture, household items and documents from the time of the Pilgrims. You receive a personal tour showing daily life in Leiden around 1609. **Good to know** This is not a large museum with digital screens. It is a real house with a story, run by volunteers who know everything about the Pilgrims. That personal approach is precisely what makes it special. **Practical** Thirty to sixty minutes. In the Pieterskwartier, walking distance from the Pieterskerk and the Jean Pesijnhofje.

The living quarters where the miller's family lived. The view from the gallery platform across Leiden's rooftops. And the collection of model mills showing different mill types. **Good to know** The mill is steep and narrow -- you climb real mill stairs. That is part of the experience, but it is not wheelchair accessible. **Practical** Thirty to sixty minutes. At the edge of the centre near the Lammermarkt. Demonstrations of weaving and spinning. The materials and tools used to make cloth. **Good to know** This is one of Leiden's true hidden gems. You walk among thousands of plant species from every continent, from tropical orchids in the historic greenhouses to the reconstruction of Clusius' original 1594 garden. **What makes it special** The Netherlands is known worldwide for tulips, flower bulbs and the flower auction. A Japanese ornamental garden. The Victoria greenhouse with giant water lilies. An orchard of heritage Dutch fruit varieties. Schaapsvishandel - Viswinkel
Schaapsvishandel has been a Leiden family business since 1938 and is the only traditional fish shop that actually originates from Leiden. While other fish sellers come from surrounding towns, Schaapsvis is rooted in the city itself. **Why Schaapsvis** The Schaap family is known for honesty and fair value. You will not be served old fish at tourist prices here. What you buy is fresh, honestly priced and prepared with care. It has been that way for almost ninety years. **The fish shop** The permanent shop at Herenstraat 48 is open on regular weekdays. You will find fresh fish, fried fish, salads, kibbeling and smoked specialties. The shop is small but the quality is high -- this is not a chain, this is craft. **Tip** Try the kibbeling or the herring sandwich. And if you are in Leiden on Wednesday or Saturday, look for the fish cart at the market -- same family, same craft, just outdoors.
